Fabric Recycling Effort Continues to Make a Difference

We have once again collected large amounts of used and salvaged fabric from our many Greener NECPA Members, and we are putting it back into use in a number of creative ways.In addition, we have an extensive collection of processed and bagged pure recycle material ready for the Recycle My Sunbrella® program. As you may or may not know, Awning Cleaning Industries used to pay to have these fabrics shipped to South Carolina, where the next step in recycling would occur.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Having a grandfather who started his awning company in the 1920s and growing up with my parents’ awning shop in our home, I can honestly say that I was born and raised in the awning business. A multi-generation family business, C. E. King & Sons, Inc. was founded in 1948, and we moved to our current East Hampton location on Long Island in 1986.

NECPA Member Voice

Last month, I sent an email to our active members asking for their opinions about our economy. In that email, I said the following:"Judging from our experience and conversations with many of you, it would seem that the business climate has been more active than in the recent past. Has something changed? Did you do something different, change your marketing or advertising strategy? Or is it, dare I say for fear of being accused of jinxing it, the economy making a comeback?

Recovers Offer Opportunity for More Revenue

Patio cushion recovers have taken off this year, perhaps because more people are creating their ultimate "staycation" places in their back yards, or they just want to update their existing patio sets with the latest outdoor fabrics. In any case, whether you are an awning or marine shop, being able to offer patio recovers is a great way to increase sales and offer another service to your customers - and many times the cushions are basic and easy to build.

Red Rock patrons also enjoy year-round outdoor dining at both locations, including an expansive enclosure that Alpha Canvas & Awning fabricated for the Red Rocks location in the Strawberry Hills section of Charlotte.

Awning Frame Innovation Changes Awning Market

Innovation can be viewed as the act of introducing something new into the marketplace. Examples can be found everywhere. The iPod and iTunes changed the way we purchase and listen to music - innovations that are responsible for the CD’s demise. For the awning industry, the staple system allowed companies to by-pass sewing and to fabricate an awning in less time than with conventional methods. Back-lit awning fabrics were seen as a great innovation at the time of their introduction, quickly growing to mainstream status.
